Dr. David Guillet An introduction to the social, cultural, political and environmental frameworks of economic activities. No prior background in economics or economic anthropology is necessary for the course but students are expected to have an interest and some background in general anthropology and ethnology. The approach is broadly comparative and examines classic themes in economic anthropology. We begin with an overview of the history of trends in economic anthropology. Each class that follows will treat a key issue or problem, including decision analysis, institutional analysis, economic behavior among non-state peoples and peasants, reciprocal and redistributive exchange, the origin and diffusion of markets, the urban informal economy, globalization and consumption Texts: Agarwal, Bina 1994 A field on ones own.
